I've put in over 1,000 hours on my necro so i'm not a noob any more

Yet on 5 attempts at the DoA I can't even get through the first groups of baddies

Maybe it's the PUGs I've joined or just me I don't know. All I want to do is be able to get further than the front gates.

I've tried SS and SV so far and a N/Me and N/Mo. I'd be very grateful if someone with a successful Necro build would post some suggestions to help me get further and hopefully get those damn gems. I'm only rank 4 in Lightbringer as I can't be bothered to grind any more

I swap out suffering for lightbringers

SS isn't really going to get you far down there. You're better off playing a bip and find a pug and hope for the best. The dmg is too great that it's not safe for you to be in aggro at all. There is only a very small handful of builds that people have found that works. The most popular of which being the OF Tank and SF Nuker build. Then there is some monks, and a bip. Playing a low HP bip, you must stay out of aggro at all times, and keep bip up on casters and monks. It's really not too hard.

yup the BiP build on wiki does kinda do it.
Do make sure that u use Sup runes for all three attributes.
This brings your health down, making Blood Renewal more effective.
Also, if you can find a +20 enchantment weapon (pref singlehanded) and a +1 (20%) Blood Magic offhand then you can keep Blood Renewal up at all times.

well i play always as 1hp so i dont even need healing exept in Foundry where i usually bring troll urgunent som1 just gotta bring Resurrection Chant for u and thats it then u can bip all the time. Skills what bip should have are: EoE , Symb , BiP , Troll urgunent rest are optional btw dont use renewal if u bring symb coz ur hp get higher and u sac more but i guess its good to have in ur skillbar imo
